Australia

   Nursing Registration

We suggest you organise your nursing registration prior to arrival, to satisfy relevant Boards requirements and ensure immediate work.

Each of the 7 Australian States and Territories has separate registration boards but reciprocal arrangements exist, so registration in one state only is required prior to your entry to Australia.


   Visa Information

International nurses (excluding New Zealand) are required to participate in the Working Holiday Maker Scheme. This scheme allows nurses on a working holiday the ability to have an extended holiday in Australia by supplementing their travel funds through employment, and offers similar opportunities for cultural understanding.

Criteria for the Working Holiday Visa:

  • 18 – 25 years of age
  • without dependant children
  • possess a return ticket or sufficient funds
  • will not undertake any studies other than English Language Course
  • intend to leave Australia at end of stay
  • possession of a passport from arrangement countries

Australia has reciprocal working holiday arrangements with 13 foreign countries: Canada, The Republic of Ireland, Japan, The Republic of Korea, Malta, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China and Finland.

Long Stay Business Visa (Up to 4 years)

This visa is best for nurses who are over 30 years of age from the above countries or from a country which does not have a reciprocal labour agreement with the Australian Government, for example, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and the USA. To qualify for this type of visa you must be sponsored by an employer for the period of your stay.

New Zealand
   Nursing Registration

We suggest you organise your nursing registration prior to arrival, to satisfy relevant Boards requirements and ensure immediate work.

Australia and New Zealand have reciprocal agreements for nursing registration through the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act which came into effect from 1st May 1998. This Act determines that anyone registered or enrolled in New Zealand is deemed to be qualified / enrolled in a participating Australian State or Territory and visa versa.


   Visa Information

Under the Working Holiday Schemes, young nurses of approved countries may travel to New Zealand for a holiday and undertake employment during their stay.

Criteria for Working Holiday Visa
  • 18 – 25 years of age
  • without dependant children
  • possess a return ticket or sufficient funds
  • meet the conditions of the particular scheme they are applying under, and
  • apply on the correct Working Holiday Scheme Application Form
  • are a holder of a visitors permit

Working Holiday Schemes exist between New Zealand and Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
